What makes a TLD a brand TLD

ICANN's glossary defines a brand TLD as "a designation for a TLD that is operated by and for an entity under its trademarked name", set out in the operator's registry agreement with ICANN. The designation is not automatic: "To qualify as a brand TLD, a registry operator must apply for the brand TLD designation and the brand's trademark must be recorded in the Trademark Clearinghouse."

The rules sit in Specification 13, which is annexed to each brand TLD's agreement (the one for .aaa is a typical example). It requires that "the TLD string is identical to the textual elements protectable under applicable law, of a registered trademark valid under applicable law". The key consequence for everyone else: "only Registry Operator, its Affiliates or Trademark Licensees are registrants of domain names in the TLD and control the DNS records associated with domain names at any level in the TLD." In plain terms, the public cannot register names under .google or .bmw. Specification 13 also lets the operator "designate no more than three ICANN accredited registrars at any point in time to serve as the exclusive registrar(s) for the TLD" (see the ICANN accredited registrars list).

Brand TLDs by the numbers

The 361 active brand TLDs make up 32.5% of the 1,111 generic TLDs in the root zone on September 26, 2026. The brand designation belongs to ICANN's New gTLD Program, and all 361 active brand TLDs appear on ICANN's list of strings delegated under that program. Their agreements are dated 2013 to 2019, most of them in 2015 (217). IANA registered the first ones on January 9, 2014 (.monash and .中信) and the latest on May 28, 2020 (.amazon, .アマゾン and .亚马逊).

Being a brand TLD is a contract status, not a type of string. .app is run by the same company as .google, but only .google carries Specification 13; ICANN lists .app as "Base, Non-Sponsored". Well-known active examples include .apple, .bmw, .microsoft, .amazon, .bbc, .canon, .sony, .netflix, .lego and .toyota.

285 companies hold the 361 active brand TLDs, and 240 of them hold exactly one. These hold the most:

Terminated brand TLDs

125 brand TLDs have a terminated agreement. ICANN's termination page explains that "either party may terminate pursuant to certain requirements in the Registry Agreement", after which ICANN decides "whether or not to transition operation of the Registry to a successor registry operator in its sole discretion". For a brand, Specification 13 adds a lock: "ICANN may not delegate the TLD to a successor registry operator for a period of two years following the Expiration Date without Registry Operator's consent", unless ICANN "reasonably determines that transitioning operation of the TLD is necessary to protect the public interest".

In the IANA database, 114 of the terminated names are now listed as "Not assigned", and 112 of those have a revocation report. The other 11 (.africamagic, .dstv, .dwg, .kyknet, .mnet, .multichoice, .mzansimagic, .naspers, .payu, .supersport and .theguardian) never appear in the IANA database at all. Revocations peaked in 2023 with 21; the most recent were .wolterskluwer (February 13, 2026), .goo (February 6, 2026), .dunlop (October 21, 2025) and .redstone (August 26, 2025).

Brand TLDs in other scripts

15 brand TLDs are internationalized domain names, 11 of them active. ICANN's list gives an English translation for each; the ASCII form is what the root zone stores (see IDN domains).

13 brand TLDs also carry Specification 12, the community designation, among them .aco, .audi, .edeka, .gea, .ieee, .ikano, .lamborghini, .lds, .leclerc and .stada.
