What ICANN accreditation means

ICANN defines a registrar as "An organization through which individuals and entities (registrants) register domain names." It adds: "A registrar that has entered into a Registrar Accreditation Agreement with ICANN is referred to as an ICANN-accredited registrar." That agreement, the RAA, is "The contract between ICANN and a generic top-level domain registrar", and ICANN says the 2013 version "is the most current and only contract governing the registrar relationship with ICANN."

Accreditation alone does not let a registrar sell every extension. It also needs a registry-registrar agreement, "A contract between a registry operator and an ICANN-accredited registrar" that, in ICANN's words, "defines the terms under which a registrar agrees to perform domain name registration services for a designated generic top-level domain." The scope is generic TLDs: ICANN's list says "These companies have been accredited by ICANN to act as registrars in one or more generic top-level domains (gTLDs)." Country codes such as .uk or .de are run under local rules; ICANN's glossary notes that "Because ccTLDs are managed locally, the rules and policies for registering domain names vary across ccTLDs."

What an IANA ID is

Every accredited registrar gets a number in IANA's Registrar IDs registry, where the registration rule reads "Assigned by ICANN". The number travels with the registrar's data: the sample WHOIS output in the 2013 RAA includes the line "Registrar IANA ID: 5555555". In the registry fetched on September 26, 2026 (last updated September 23, 2026), accredited registrars hold IDs from 2 to 10,007. The lowest belong to Network Solutions, LLC (2) and Register.com - Network Solutions, LLC (9); the highest to Domain The Net Technologies Ltd. (10,007).

IANA IDs of well-known registrars

The IDs below are looked up in the IANA registry by exact registrar name. GoDaddy.com, LLC is 146, NameCheap, Inc. is 1068 and Cloudflare, Inc. is 1910. The RDAP base URL is where each registrar answers registration data queries; ICANN's glossary notes that "RDAP was designed as a replacement for the WHOIS protocol."

Thousands of accreditations, a few names

Many of the 3,321 accredited IDs share a name stem: 1,501 start with "DropCatch.com", 500 start with "Gname", 51 start with "Sav.com" and 24 start with "Dynadot". ICANN's list shows the same pattern through the website field: 1,552 registrars give namebright.com as their website, 490 give gname.com and 477 give networksolutions.com. Those three websites cover 2,519 of the 3,323 entries (75.8%), while 685 registrars list a website no other registrar uses.

The RDAP field tells the same story: 3,318 of the 3,321 accredited IDs have an RDAP base URL, spread over 470 host names, and the most common host, rdap.namebright.com, serves 1,552 IDs. For the RDAP and WHOIS servers of each TLD registry, see WHOIS servers by TLD.

Where accredited registrars are based

ICANN's list gives a country or territory for each registrar, 79 in all. United States of America leads with 2,808 of 3,323 entries (84.5%). The three large website groups above account for most of that: 2,518 of their 2,519 entries are in the United States. Among the other 804 registrars, 290 (36.1%) are based in the United States, followed by China (71), India (63), Hong Kong, China (50), United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (29) and Germany (27). Terminated and reserved IDs

IANA keeps old numbers in the registry. 1,168 IDs carry the status Terminated, and none of them appears on ICANN's current list of accredited registrars. 12 terminated IDs still show an RDAP URL. ICANN's own registrar page sends readers to the IANA list "For a list of current and past accredited registrars". The 15 reserved IDs cover special uses:

The two lists match closely. All 3,321 IDs that IANA marks Accredited are on ICANN's list. ICANN's list, which it says is "updated on a daily basis", also includes ID 4554, DreamIT Solutions Pty. Ltd., which the IANA registry does not list yet and ID 9995, Pre-Delegation Testing Registrar #1, which IANA lists as reserved. For 21 IDs the two lists spell the name slightly differently, mostly in punctuation.
